Alain de Botton quote: “Understanding that mankind would always …”

“Understanding that mankind would always be as conflicted about its visual tastes as about its ethical ones, [Stendhal] noted, ‘There are as many styles of beauty as there are visions of happiness’.

To call a work of architecture or design beautiful is to recognise [sic] it as a rendition of values critical to our flourishing, a transubstantiation of our individual ideals in a material medium” (100).

  1. Just read an advance copy of de Botton’s new book, “Religion for Atheists” in which he has chapter on what a secular society can take away from sacred architecture. A very good book. Interested in reading his others now.
