CAMILLE: How are you coping with the situation?
AI: There is always going to be some limitation, good or bad. Under any kind of regulation, an artist can always find his creative space. Creativity itself grows out of a restricted condition. I don’t regard limitation strictly as a negative. When one is denied an immediate sharing of artwork and public commentary, the silence voice becomes another kind of creative form. Silence itself has its own critical force” (67-68).

He’s an incredible man and artist. It’s just a shame more people know him for his ‘birds nest’ stadium in Beijing rather than his other outstanding works. I still haven’t forgiven him for destroying those rare vases.
Seriously transparent and sweet words.
Nicely put! Thanks for the comment. Best, Kevin.
I loved reading this. Silence really does have its own creativity. Sometimes silence, helps add to a piece when an artist is creating. Wonderful article
I agree. Thanks for your comment! Best, Kevin.
Great quote. Silence as creation? Like sometimes the most creative thing to do is nothing at all. He is a wise man and a wonderful speaker.
I couldn’t agree more. Thank you for commenting! Best, Kevin.
